Mark Staton Co

American Alligator Artisans

Our mission is to provide our customers with high quality products, fair pricing, and the best in customer service.

We can be your alligator resource, no matter what your interest.  If you are a manufacturer, designer, retailer or consumer we are the one stop alligator source for you.

About Mark Staton Co

What began as a one-man operation in 1992 has slowly grown into a small but dedicated team of a dozen employees who are familiar with our skins and customers. Following a three-year stint in Papua New Guinea working as the Technical Manager and later as General Manager of the world's largest commercial crocodile farm, Mark Staton and his family returned to Louisiana and settled in Lafayette, which is strategically located in the heart of the state's alligator-rich marshlands and bayou country.  Because of our association with farmers, trappers and skin dealers in Louisiana and beyond, we are fortunate to have a supply of the worlds most valuable reptile skins. These high-quality skins are sent to the best reptile tanneries in the United States to produce some of the finest exotic leather available. We pride ourselves in our customer service and industry knowledge.

Mark Staton Co. considers alligator and the products made from their leather to be one of this area's most valuable natural resources. We are dedicated to the preservation and utilization of the resource in a responsible way. "From the Swamp to the Showroom" is an expression we use here which means that we are involved with every aspect of this trade.

Colors & Finishes

Alligator Selection is what we do

At Mark Staton Co., we believe that selling just any skin to a customer is unacceptable.  We take pride in supplying you with the best skin for your project.  To do this, we often spend considerable time and effort sorting through stacks of skins to select the best one for the job.  When we've made our selection, you can rest assured that it will not only fit the use it is intended for, but that it is also the most cost-efficient skin we have to accomplish that need.

Matte (Desert) Finish

The production of matte finish alligator  does not involve the high-pressure stroking characteristic of the glazing process. Instead, a luster is achieved through buffing and the application of waxes and other finishing agents. This method of finishing, along with techniques such as the addition of oils to the leather and tumbling the skins in drums, produces the soft and supple feel characteristic of matte finish skins. This finish has gained wide acceptance among both manufacturers and consumers of high quality alligator and crocodile leathergoods

Glazed (Classic) Finish

The glazing of alligator skins is performed with a special glazing machine. A polished glass or agate cylinder is fast-stroked under high pressure over the surface of the leather after it has been dyed and sprayed with finishing agents. The mirror-like finish which results produces the classic shiny appearance of alligator and crocodile leathergoods

Mark Staton

Mark has been working with alligators and alligator skins for 46 years.  He obtained a PhD in Biology that led him to the alligator and crocodile farming industry.  Later, he started selling and working with finished alligator skins.  He credits much of his success to his wife Allison who has always been supportive of his unusual career path.   After they traveled around the world to work with different crocodilian species, they settled in Lafayette, LA, to start the original Mark Staton Co. selling tanned alligator and crocodile skins to manufacturers.  With Mark’s knowledge of the skins and Allison’s ability to sew and build products they began to create products.  Later they added employees to grow the team’s abilities and output.  He finds it a joy that his daughter Karin Marie Hebert and her husband Clint are part of this team and successful business.  When he is not working hard at the business (which is usually is), he enjoys gardening and refurbishing a newly acquired sailboat.

Contract Tanning

If you are interested in keeping the alligator skins you have hunted, bring them to us!

We take in your salted alligator hides (no whole animals).  We accept belly skins or hornback skins.  Please call before you bring the hides.

You choose the color and finish - limited colors and finishes for hornbacks.  You will usually have your finished skins in 10 - 12 months, depending on the schedule of the tannery.

The cost to tan your hide is based on the measurement in centimeters at the widest point across the finished alligator hide.  A deposit of approximately 50% is collected with the skin.

*Skinning should take place as soon as possible after harvest.

*Keep animal and hide out of direct sunlight and heat.

*A fine grain mixing salt works best for curing the hide and should be applied generously.

* All hides must be properly tagged and presented with proper license.

Not sure what to make with your finished alligator skins?  We can help with that too.  Choose from "Our Line" of products or talk to us about custom products.

We can also buy your alligator skins.  Price varies with the market.

Please call to see if we are accepting skins before you come.
